St. Francis was born in 1181 or 1182 as the son of a rich cloth merchant, Peter Bernardone and Giovana Pica. At 14. he joined his father's trade. After ten years of care-free life, the Lord told him: "Go and repair my Church". The Gospel urged him to renounce wealth and adopt the very lifestyle of Jesus as an itinerant preacher, begging. In 1209, he got Papal approval for his Rule. Thus was born the Order of Friars Minor, which has three branches today: OFM, Conventuals and Capuchins. In 1212, the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) began with St. Clare taking vows. In 1221, the Secular Franciscan Order was founded. With Tertiaries opting for religious life, the Third Order Regular Communities began. Besides preaching, Francis frequently served the lepers. His writings consist of 28 documents including the Rule, the Testament and the Canticle of Creatures. His burning love for Jesus urged him to live the Lord's poverty at his birth, charity at his death and humility in the Holy Eucharist. Francis prayed for the Crucified Lord's pain in his body and his love in his heart. St. Francis embraced Sister Death on 3 October 1126 and was buried on 4 October. He was canonized in 1228. Indeed, he was the Second Christ. The Singing Mystic joined the heavenly choirs, but his song goes on.
